About us

Background

In Somalia, women-led media organizations have long been at the forefront of efforts to amplify women’s voices and promote gender-responsive journalism. Yet, despite their shared goals, these groups have often worked in isolation, limiting their collective impact on the media landscape and public discourse. The sector remains predominantly male-dominated, with few women represented in senior editorial roles or decision-making platforms.

In response to these challenges, a coalition of women-led media organizations came together in 2023 with a bold vision: to unite their efforts, pool their strengths, and speak with one voice. This collaboration began informally through joint activities and dialogues and gained momentum during a pivotal forum held on the International Day of Human Rights under the theme “The Role of Women in Media in Reporting Stories of Vulnerable People.” The forum underscored the power of collective advocacy and the urgent need for sustained solidarity.

Motivated by this shared vision, eight women-led media organizations formally agreed to establish a unified platform dedicated to advancing gender equality in Somali media. On June 1, 2024, Women in Media Alliance Somalia (WIMA Somalia) was officially launched as a national coalition. The alliance represents a historic step toward building a cohesive, feminist media movement that uplifts women’s voices, strengthens leadership, and redefines media narratives in Somalia.
